Technology
Trimethoprim (TMP), a widely used antibiotic often present in wastewater treatment plant discharges, can disrupt the ecosystem and pose risks to human health when it contaminates soil and water. To solve this problem, Korean researchers have developed a practical and disposable electrochemical sensor for the rapid on-site detection of TMP in water samples. This innovative μTMP chip enables efficient monitoring and management of environmental pollutants such as antibiotics:

Regulation
The EU is taking an important step towards achieving its zero pollution ambition with the revision of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, which is set to enter into force on 1 January 2025. The new rules will further protect human health and the environment from harmful discharges of urban wastewater and ensure cleaner rivers, lakes, groundwater and coastlines across Europe. The revised directive will deliver financial benefits of around €6.6 billion per year by 2040, far exceeding the estimated implementation costs, while simplifying reporting obligations for Member States:

Financing
The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing €22.5 million in non-dilutive financing to Chromafora, a Swedish cleantech company, to step up Europe’s fight against widespread pollutants known as “forever chemicals”. Chromafora will use the loan to advance technology to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances – or PFAS – from water:
